Soul Meaning Playlist

by A.D. Starrling

Hello and thank you for having me today!

Most authors I read about listen to music while they’re writing. I’m even listening to music while I write this (the playlist to Book 3 in the series, which is absolutely rocking my socks off!).  Music gets the creative mojo going, if you see what I mean. It puts us writers in the mood and the right frame of mind to, you know, do our stuff, like kick some pirate ass, or punch that alien sucker in its third eye, or even stab that unholy if exceptionally sexy vampire with the rock hard abs in the heart. Or in my case, writing action scenes. I just love some good American heavy metal when I’m writing my fight scenes. I thought it would be fun to share some of the tracks from my playlist to Soul Meaning with you. You have been warned. Most of them are LOUD!

  1. Won’t Back Down by Fuel

I always imagine Lucas and Reid running and fighting to this music. Bullets, swords, rocket-propelled grenades, the whole lot!

  1. Lying from You by Linkin Park

It’s Linkin Park. Nuff said.

  1. Bodies by Drowning Pool

This song accompanied many of Lucas’s kick-ass moments when he was raining vengeance and death upon the Hunters (e.g. the Pennsylvania Avenue sky rise scene). The drum beat is amazing!

  1. Higher by Creed

This is from the soundtrack to Titan AE, an animated sci-fi film released by 20th Century Fox in 2000, and featuring the voices of Matt Damon and Drew Barrymore. The chorus is beautifully haunting and was great for certain sections of the book.

  1. Always by Saliva

This is just full of angst, with a rocking chorus that expresses a lot of Lucas’s frustrations!

  1. Running Away by Hoobastank

Another angst-filled song for Lucas’s darker days.

  1. Nothing by A

A fantastic fight track. I particularly like the heavy beats at the start of this song. It just gets me in the mood for an action scene straight away!

  1. I’m With You by Linkin Park

It’s getting louder!

  1. Up and Gone by Hoobastank

Another one with feelings.

  1. Numb by Linkin Park

More from these brilliant guys!

  1. I Hate You by Sick Puppies

Another angst-filled one.

  1. Welcome to the Universe by 30 Seconds to Mars

Featuring the fabulous Jared Leto.

  1. You’re Going Down by Sick Puppies

A perfect song for when Lucas decided to stop running and to stand and fight.

  1. Faint by Linkin Park

This was a kick-ass song to write to, especially that chorus. Imagine one of the fight scenes with Lucas using his swords and guns when you listen to it!

  1. What’s It Feel Like To Be A Ghost? by Taking Back Sunday

From the first Transformers movie soundtrack.

  1. Survive by Sick Puppies

A rocking song that expresses Lucas’s determination to live, fight, and win.

  1. War by Sick Puppies

Yet another amazing fight scene song!

  1. Given Up by Linkin Park

Superb rocking chorus and beats that gets Lucas’s adrenaline pumping (and mine!).

  1. This Moment by Disturbed

This is by far my favorite song of the entire playlist. It’s from the first Transformers movie soundtrack and is seriously hard core, with deliciously vicious lyrics.

There were 4 more songs that didn’t manage to make the published playlist as Spotify didn’t have them available (boohoo). These were:

  1. Spy Hunter by Saliva. This song gives me chills, in a good way.

  1. It’s My Turn to Fly by The Urge. Another song from the Titan AE soundtrack, this was a great one for the HALO drop.

  1. Right Before Your Eyes by Hoobastank. This is from The Daredevil soundtrack. It’s a great theme for Lucas, especially in Part Two of the book. It’s a song that defines the changes he goes through, both physically and mentally, leading up to and including his second fight with Thorne.

  1. Walk Away by Mad at Gravity. This is from the soundtrack for the movie Reign of Fire and features the most amazing video!

All these songs (including the missing ones) are on the News section of my website, where the posts can be filtered under Music. I’ve also posted videos, courtesy of some fabulous people on You Tube. Look out for music from the playlist to King’s Crusade, the second book in the series Seventeen, starting May 2013!

Happy reading, writing, and blogging!
